The haemophilia centre and thrombosis unit provides comprehensive laboratory services for the diagnosis and management of various inherited and acquired bleeding and thrombotic disorders. The laboratory is located on the first floor of the medical school at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust.
The laboratories have been fully accredited by Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA) UK Ltd since 1994. The routine and specialist diagnostic service provides a range of tests for the diagnosis of various inherited and acquired bleeding and thrombotic disorders.
The service includes:
- A highly specialised phenotypic service for the definitive diagnosis of congenital bleeding and thrombotic disorders
- Diagnosis and treatment monitoring of patients registered at the Haemophilia Centre & Thrombosis Unit
- A molecular genetic laboratory service in inherited bleeding disorders
- A molecular genetic laboratory service for the screening of abnormalities in thrombophilia
- An out of hours service to cover specialised haemostasis and thrombotic tests
- A laboratory reference service for other haemophilia treatment units including assistant with supplies of reagents and standards when necessary
- A national educational service for clinicians, clinical scientists, biomedical scientists and medical personnel invited to the department to receive training through the International Haemophilia Training Centre (IHTC) programmes and fellowship placements.
- A satellite routine coagulation service to the Pathology Laboratory at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore
There is an out of hours on call specialist service provided by a haemostasis biomedical scientist which can be arranged by discussion with the consultant on call for RFL HC & TU through switchboard.

- Samples for coagulation tests which are greater than four hours old
- Samples for INR which are greater than six hours old

Please call the laboratory during routine hours for additional tests, as these can only be added onto samples, within the department, which are taken on the same day and within the specified timescale stated above.

All out of hours services are provided by the RFL haematology/blood transfusion department (5pm–9am Monday - Sunday.
