Professor Valerie Lund, surgeon at the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital, received a CBE in the New Year Honours list for her services to medicine. Professor Lund is an authority in the field of sinus surgery and well-known for her contribution to sinonasal tumour surgery. Professor Lund said of the award: “It was quite a surprise but a very pleasant one! “I chose ear nose throat (ENT) for the breadth of interest and variation it offers and it has certainly given me that over the years. ”ENT is becoming increasingly sub-specialised, but there are also considerable possibilities for collaboration and shared patient care with the oncologists, plastic and maxillo-facial surgeons and, in my own case, with the ophthalmologists, allergists, immunologists and respiratory physicians. It’s been a very rewarding career so far and I’m truly grateful to be acknowledged in this way.”
In addition to her clinical and academic achievements, Professor Lund has served as chair of the educational board for the Royal College of Surgeons of England and of Women in Surgical Training, a body established by the college to address the shortage of women in the profession. She was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons Council from 1994-2006 and recently stepped down as chair of the Intercollegiate Exam Board in Otolaryngology.
