Almost all members of the Royal Free’s shadow members’ council attended its first meeting this week. They received a briefing from Pam Chesters, who will chair both the council and the board of directors when we become a foundation trust, which we expect to be on 1 April. “It was great to see so many of the members, all of whom I am also meeting individually,” said Pam. “Inevitably for the first few meetings, the focus will be on bringing the members up to speed on the work of the trust and the challenges and opportunities we face and so there will be a number of presentations by senior trust staff and documents to read. But I know that it won’t be long before they have found their feet and can start giving us their thoughts and feedback on our plans for the future. “A number of members have already flagged up their interest in improving customer care and I would be surprised if this did not feature once the council as a whole is in a position to express its priorities. This is a key priority for the board, and the members’ council perspective on this, and other issues, can only help the trust shape its services to ensure that patients are at the centre of all we do.”
