High scores for food and cleanliness

posted 27/07/2010

The Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust has continued to score high marks for cleanliness and food at the Royal Free and the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear hospitals.

As with the past three years, the hospitals scored ‘good’ for environment, including cleanliness, and ‘excellent’ for the quality of food in the Patient Environment Action Team (PEAT) inspection 2010.

PEATs carry out unannounced assessments of the state of the building fabric, overall cleanliness including infection control measures such as hand hygiene, the quality of food served to patients and staff, and patient privacy and dignity.

The teams are made up of matrons, nurses, doctors, facilities managers, catering and domestic services managers from other trusts, and representatives of patient groups.

Jeremy Sharp, director of facilities, said: “The results are a deserved boost to our domestic services team who worked exceptionally hard over the past year while the trust undertook refurbishment work. Their task was made more difficult by work on the new front entrance. The team consistently delivered high standards while this building work was going on.”

David Sloman, chief executive, said: “Many thanks to our staff for all their hard work in ensuring our hospitals meet high standards of cleanliness and patient environment, and provide excellent food to our patients and staff.

“As with previous years, we are very pleased to receive so many positive comments by patients.”

Although the PEAT assessment is an annual inspection, the trust is always looking to recruit members of the public who could help in “mock” assessments throughout the year. Your role would involve taking part in a full assessment and providing feedback to the trust’s facilities and nursing teams on how improvements can be made as the trust strives to achieve an “excellent” rating in future audits.
