Neurosciences - Physiotherapists

The neurosciences physiotherapy service offers an in- and out-patient service to people with any neurological condition with a resulting physical impairment. The team is made up of sixteen physiotherapists and assistants with broad and specialist experience within the area of neurosciences.

The team offer assessment, advice, treatment and management of patients whose condition may include muscle weakness; changes in muscle tone; soft tissue contracture or decreased range of movement; movement disorders and respiratory difficulties.

A broad range of specialist treatments and interventions may be offered as appropriate including posture and positioning advice and management; specialist seating, splinting, spasticity management and functional rehabilitation and re-education of activities such as sitting, standing and walking.

Location:

The in-patient neurosciences physiotherapy team is based at the Royal Free Hospital site in the small gym, lower ground floor. A specialist service is provided to the regional neurosurgical unit, the regional neurology unit, critical care, and the stroke unit.

All patients requiring physiotherapy input on these wards will routinely be assessed by a physiotherapist. Patients requiring neuro-physiotherapy on outlying wards can be referred to the physiotherapy team by any member of the multidisciplinary team via bleep (2486 for neurology; 2925 for neurosurgery and 2924 for stroke).

The neurological out-patient physiotherapy service is also based at the Royal Free Hospital site in the small gym. The outpatient service is offered to all patients referred from Royal Free Hospital consultants and referrals are accepted from GPs in Camden.

A specialist vestibular service is also available for patients referred from the Royal Free Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Hospital and GPs in Camden.

Physiotherapists also attend multidisciplinary botulinum toxin clinic.
